Trip introduction
The next 5 days, we will explore hiking through APU AUSANGATE and the mountains of colors called VINICUNCA. This is an impressive five-day trek in the Vilcabamba mountain range, on a route called "Camino del Apu Ausangate", located in the immediate vicinity of the highest sacred mountains in Cusco. The Apu is the bearer of Life and guardian of one of the most varied ecosystems of untouched mountains in the world. Unlike the Inca Trail, no permission is required for the Ausangate walk. The hike is one of the quietest in the area and you probably will not see another hiker.
The hike offers a variety of wildlife including flying condors, vicuna, bobcats and pumas. The campsites are often next to beautiful blue lakes. You will also have the opportunity to see the Rainbow Mountain! The colorful sandstone mountains in the Vinicunca area is probably the best thing you will see in Peru!
Responsible Travel.
By booking this trip, you will be helping provide a special Christmas breakfast for low income children in Cusco.
Overview
The classic Ausangate trek 5 days is the complete tour around these imposing mountains, compared to other trekking in Cusco, here the trek is focused on the natural landscapes, on the customs of its inhabitants and above all on the beliefs of its inhabitants Due to its mountains, which were considered Gods for a long time, this trekking is classified as the 2nd most beautiful and demanding trekking circuit in Peru, however, a good experience will depend on good physical preparation to complete the itinerary adequately.
Day 1: CUSCO – TINKI - UPIS
We will pass by your hotel at 6 in the morning in our private transport to leave the city and go south to the town of Tinki, this journey will take us approximately 3 hours, and in the place our team of muleteers together with their horses will be waiting for us to organize all our equipment that we will take during the 5 days of walking.
The first section of the walk is relatively calm, it will be a total of 7 kilometers until you reach the Upis camp, which is located at 4,400 meters above sea level. This part of the path is considered an easy level since it is largely flat terrain. and throughout the tour we will be facing the majestic Ausangate.
After approximately 3 hours of walking we will arrive at our camp where our tents will be ready for us, the rest of the afternoon will be free to have a better acclimatization and it is here where we will spend the night.
Day 2: UPIS– ARAPA PASS – PUCACOCHA PASS - ANANTAPATA
20 kilometers of walking await us, being mostly uphill, we will leave upis quite early after having our breakfast and we will start the ascent of approximately 2 hours until the arapa pass where we will have the side view of Ausangate, we will continue the ascent until we find a group of lagoons among which the Pucacocha lagoon stands out the most for its large size and its reddish color, it is here where we will have lunch in the middle of the sacred mountains of Cusco.
During the afternoon, we will continue the walk to conquer the PucaCocha pass with its almost 5000 meters, it will be a challenge to achieve with enough perseverance, then we will descend for approximately 2 hours to Ananatapata where our camp is located, the rest of the afternoon we will have to taste a hot chocolate and later a dinner prepared by our cheff.
Day 3: ANANTA PATA - WARMISAYA PASS – MOUNTAIN OF COLORS – AUSANGATE COCHA
This will be the day with the greatest physical effort since we will get up early with the intention of conquering the Warmisaya pass located almost 5000 meters above sea level, from the top we will be able to see part of the rainbow mountains, however, our intention will not end here. Arriving first at the mountains of colors and not having anyone around us in the place to be able to take photos, depending on the weather conditions we will be able to see the sunrise and how the colors stand out in the sunlight.
Once our visit to the mountain of colors is over, we will return by the same path to Anantapata where our cooks will be waiting for us with lunch. In the afternoon we will continue the walk for 2 hours until we reach our camp located in Aunsangate cocha on 4800 m. meters above sea level.
We will have part of the afternoon to explore the place, it is possible to see some animals in the area such as vizcachas
Day 4: AUSANGATE COCHA - PALOMANI PASS - JAMPA PAMPA
The 4th day will be just as intense as the previous ones, we will leave the camp at approximately 7 in the morning to make a last ascent to 5200 meters above sea level and reach the Palomani pass, this will be the highest point we will reach During the 5 days of the expedition and from the same place where we are closest to the snowy Ausangate, the climb will take approximately 2 hours, and at the top we can see some other lagoons in the area in the distance.
We will continue our walk down the mountain for 2 additional hours until we reach the lunch place, and in the afternoon we will continue the last section of the walk to our last camp in the Jampa Pampa area at 4800 meters above sea level, from In this place we can see the snowy butterfly and three peaks in the distance.
Day 5: JAMPA PAMPA - JAMPA PASS – 7 LAGOONS - PACCHANTA
The last day, despite already feeling the exhaustion typical of the days traveled, I will continue to feel intense since we will leave our camp at 6 in the morning to ascend for almost 2 hours until the last step, we will reach 5000 thousand meters above the level from the sea, from here three peaks and the snowy butterfly will be visualized more clearly, from there our descent visiting the 7 lagoons of Ausangate will make our expedition memorable, finally arriving at Pacchanta where our cooks will be waiting for us to offer us the last lunch, If you like, you can take the opportunity to enter the thermal baths of the place and thus relax the muscles after the 75 km that we will have traveled during the 5 days, the thermal water sources are thermo-medicinal since they contain sulfur.
Finally we will board our vehicle to return to Cusco, arriving at approximately 6 pm in the city of Cusco.
