Trip introduction
Choquequirao is considered one of the least visited places by tourists, however in the future it will be a destination that no one will want to miss because of how wonderful it is. According to the studies we carried out, this place is considered much larger than Machu Picchu but unlike Choquequirao has different architectural characteristics since it was built in a late period.
This place is known for being one of the last refuges of the Inca era after the Spanish invasion, its construction on top of the Apurimac canyon make this city a place that is difficult to access for anyone even today.
Responsible Travel.
By booking this trip, you will be helping provide a special Christmas breakfast for low income children in Cusco.
Overview
The 3-day trek to Choquequirao is designed for visitors who are in fairly good physical condition, since we will take a walk dominated by steep ascents and descents, as well as adverse weather conditions. We know more about the flora and fauna of the place and we will discover more about the Inca culture visiting the most important areas of this city considered the twin brother of Macu Picchu.
Day 1: CUSCO – CAPULIYOC – PLAYA ROSALINAS – MARANPATA
We start the day quite early with the pick up of each one of our visitors from their hotels at 3 in the morning to leave Cusco and go north to the town of Cachora and then arrive at Capuliyoc where our team of muleteers is ready to organize our team and which will also be in charge of taking our duffel bags to the next stop where we will spend the night.
This part of the walk consists of descending to the Riviera of the Apurimac river in an estimated time of approximately 4 hours through a zigzagging path, appreciating the snow-capped peaks in front such as the Padrayoc and part of what is the Apurimac canyon considered one of the deepest in the world.
Once in Playa we will have the opportunity to have a buffet lunch prepared by our chef, once lunch is finished we will continue the hike but this time in the mountains for 4 additional hours passing through small towns like Santa Rosa until we reach the town of Maranpata where we will have the opportunity to have dinner and spend the night.
Day 2: MARANPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAO- MARANPATA
The intention of this day is to try to make the most of our visit to Choquequirao in this sense we will have a buffet breakfast at 5 in the morning and then walk to the Choquequirao control point that will take us approximately 1 hour and in lunar we will start our Exploration, visiting mainly the squares, temples, houses, and doing some other walks such as the sector of the llamas, which is considered a mandatory visit to the place since in other Inca cities designs carved on the rocks like this one are not appreciated. . Being a larger city compared to Machu Picchu, the places are often far from each other, for which it will be necessary to take short walks to be able to visualize everything that this place offers us.
Our guide will be informing throughout the visit the reason and why this place was built and what relationship it had with others in the area, and at the end of the visit we will return to the town of Maranpata where we will have dinner and rest early to return the next day to Cuzco.
Day 3: MARAMPATA ― CAPULIOC ― CUSCO
We will need to leave our camp at dawn, at approximately 5 in the morning to begin our descent to the Chikiska camp. All this return journey is the same path that was taken at the beginning, and in Chikiska we will have the option of having an organized lunch by our chef and then continue, but this time going up to Capuliyoc. We will complete this entire journey in approximately 8 hours at a moderate but constant walking pace.
Arriving in Capuliyoc our transport will be ready to bring us back to Cusco, arriving in the city at approximately 8 pm and leaving us in our respective hotels.
