Trip introduction
Choquequirao is known as the sister of Machu Picchu for being a city built in the Inca period after Machu Picchu, the name means "Cradle of Gold" and it is located at the top of the Apurimac canyon, surrounded by imposing snow-capped peaks, Choquequirao is a very remote and rarely visited Inca city since to get to this place it is necessary to carry out the original walk of this region since there is no other means of transport to this day.
Despite being less visited, it is important to mention that it is estimated to be 3 times larger than Machu Picchu, but many of its buildings are still tangled in the middle of the vegetation of the place.
Choquequirao was one of the last refuges of those Incas who continued to resist after the arrival of the Spanish, but it was finally abandoned and over the years it was covered by all the vegetation. Being quite a large place and presenting different enclosures, many of which are far apart, our 5-day trek will give you the option of visiting a full day to fully explore this incredible archaeological site.
Overview
During the 5 days of the tour we will appreciate beautiful high Andean landscapes and mountains near the Apurimac canyon. In addition, a unique architecture completely different from those already seen in Cusco, highlighting the llamas sector, in the same way, along the trail you will experience different microclimates and ecosystems as we descend through one of the deepest canyons in the world. as is the Apurimac.
Day 1: CUSCO – CAPULIYOC – PLAYA
Our adventure will begin at 5 in the morning when our staff in charge of the trek go through their respective hotels to pick you up from your hotel and make the first stretch of trip by car for approximately 4 hours until you reach the Capuliyoc sector located at 2800 meters. above sea level.
It is here where the rest of our team will be waiting for our arrival to organize all our equipment that will be transported on horses during the following days. From this place, you can see part of the lost ruins of Choquequirao and the Apurimac canyon with its impressive snow-capped mountains such as Padreyoc (5,571 m/18,387 feet) on the mountain in front.
Now with our backpacks on our backs we will start the descent for approximately 3 hours until we reach the Chikiska area where our chef will not offer a buffet lunch. After lunch we will have some time to rest and then continue for approximately 2 more hours to our first camp called Playa Rosalina (2061m/6762ft).
Here we will spend the rest of the afternoon recovering our strength since the following day will be much more demanding.
Day 2: PLAYA – MARAMPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAO
We will start our second day quite early with the intention of making the ascent avoiding the first rays of sun that could generate a much hotter and more exhausting environment. That is why we will leave our camp at 5:30 in the morning to cross the bridge to the other end of the river and start the ascent during the first 2 hours and arrive at Santa Rosa where we will take a break and take advantage of the place to use the bathrooms if required.
We continue the ascent for about 3 more hours through a steep path until we reach the town of Maranpata where we can take advantage of the place and the view to have lunch. We continue the walk for an approximate time of 1 hour until we reach the camp that is located in the same area of the Choquequirao archaeological park where we will spend our second night.
Day 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO
Our big day arrived, we have a whole day to explore this place that, as we mentioned at the beginning, is considered 3 times bigger than Machu Picchu, therefore, after breakfast, we will leave our things in the camp to only take what is necessary and together with our guide explore each corner of this wonderful place place by place.
As it is a fairly large place, we will begin our visit by visiting the main squares, the Usnu, which was a religious area where rituals were performed, water channels and our guide will inform us in detail of the history of how and why this was built. place high in the mountains.
Then we will continue our visit descending to what is called the sector of the llamas, it is named for the presence of figures of llamas carved on the agricultural terraces, making this place unique and special compared to what already exists in Cusco.
After having a day of exhaustive explorations, we will return to our same camp to enjoy dinner by our chef and finally be able to rest to return the next day.
Day 4: MARAMPATA- PLAYA - CHIKISKA
Our return begins after breakfast, leaving our camp and returning along the same path for approximately 6 hours, passing through the small towns of Maranpata, always having a view of the Apurimac canyon at all times. The descent will be quite exhausting until we reach Playa and then continue the walk to our Chikiska camp where we will have lunch and the afternoon free to rest and wait for the last day.
Day 5: CHIKISKA – CAPULIYOC – CUSCO
In the same way as previous days, after breakfast, we will start our last ascent early to avoid the heat wearing us out on the ascent. It will be approximately 4 hours of a fairly intense ascent where we will enjoy for the last time all the landscape that surrounds us, already in Capuliyoc we will have lunch and a farewell ceremony for our muleteers who helped us transport our equipment during the days of the trek.
