Virgin De Carmen 3 Days

Trip introduction

Every July for three days the town of Paucartambo in Cusco renews its ancient tradition of worshiping Our Lady of Carmen. This ritual is over 300 years old with a series of character dances. The characters are masked and represent the conflict between the Antis (jungle region of the Inca period) and the Qollas (Puno region of the Inca period).

At about 9 am we will start our journey to the town of Paucartambo. We will arrive at noon and witness the start of all the major popular dances. Each dance comes from the 4 major regions of the ancient Inca empire. Each dance plays a specific and important role throughout the party. You will see that each costume is embroidered by hand and is unique. We will have the opportunity to try some of the local cuisine with the local people.

Peru is a predominately Catholic country and this is represented in their traditions and customs. People believe and keep respect for their virgins and saints and this will be reflected in this festivity with Mass in the main street and with the singing of ancient songs in Quechua which are interpreted by the dancers. We will tour the festival appreciating its beautiful and colorful costumes while we wait for the first procession of the Virgin. The procession will be in the afternoon.

We leave early morning for the three crosses which is the highest point between the mountains and the jungle Paucartambo to wait for the sunrise. Sunrise at Paucartambo is a natural phenomenon where the sun only rises in the same way in Japan. This natural event is the most famous in the region and you may be lucky enough to see it. Returning to Paucartambo in the morning we will have time to rest for the afternoon. After resting we will see the guerrillas and the farewell party - This is the dramatization of the dispute of the virgin between Qollas (Colla puno) and the redskins (jungle) according to popular tradition. Finally, after the event party will return to Cusco for the night.
